Dating winchester rifles

I have a model 70 .416 serial G20XX and trying to find out more information on the gun.A gun smith friend said that it is not stock and is pretty customized, but there is nothing on it that indicates that it was done by a custom shop. 1992 I already had almost 1300 rounds through my Custom Super Grade. Some one told me that they never produced a serial number list in the 90's when they started with a Alpha????I have 3 PF winchesters that I am pretty sure were made during the 1980's that also start with G and then 7 digits.1932--Serial numbers were picked at random and large blocks were skipped so serial numbers will be found as high as 849,110.Total guns produced is from 1890 to 1941 is 764,365 Serial number 1 thru 64,520 fall in the pre January 1 1899 serial number range These were manfactured in the following Calibers --22 Short ,22 Long Rifle, 22 Short , Long and Long rifle and 22 WRF.It’s the number one bolt-action of all time, proudly made in the U. The legendary strength of its 3-rings-of-steel receiver paired with a hammer-forged barrel, combine to yield the most popular bolt-action rifle in history.

I have the book: Winchester dates of manufacture 1849-1984. Also, was the guy correct saying this chambering was only done a couple of years.Yes I tried that site but with out the letter in front of it.The date was 1955 and I would love to say I made a heck of a deal.I would add that there always seems to be a lot of confusion about the "G" prefix. To cut to the chase, a serial number with the "G" prefix, and a serial number without a prefix are plain and simple, different serial numbers. You cannot use the charts for non-prefix numbers and expect a "G" prefix number to correlate.Top choice of elite military snipers, the Model 700 is unequalled in tactical precision.
